If you just want to update your WINE components so that you can use the 64-bit executable with the "Mac"/WINE client, there's no need to delete it.
Crossover is also the only reasonable way to be able to use DirectX 11 instead of DirectX 9 with LOTRO, regardless of your Mac's CPU type.įirst, if you have the "Mac"/WINE client from SSG, it needs to be deleted. And since Apple SOC Macs can't run any version of MacOS earlier than Big Sur 11, such Macs can run LOTRO only with Crossover (which includes a 32-bit compatibility layer). Please note that this will not work in post-Mojave 10.14 versions of MacOS due to the lack of OS-level 32-bit support in post-Mojave versions of MacOS. (The 32-bit version is playable but has poorer performance than the 64-bit version.)

Which, I will note, is also the Windows version of the game packaged with WINE – it's just that the WINE they include is too old to use the 64-bit version of the game and they offer no easy tools to upgrade the WINE components. This procedure will also be helpful in the future if SSG decides to no longer offer their "Mac"/WINE installer. It will allow you to run LOTRO, either the 32-bit or 64-bit executable, in any modern version of MacOS up to Mojave 10.14. If you are new to LOTRO and haven't yet installed it on your Mac or you are a current or former LOTRO player who deleted LOTRO from your Mac or you just want to avoid the "Mac"/WINE client and use the standard Windows install within open-source WINE this procedure is for you.
